Join us as we explore the Jewish history of Bay City and Caro. Located in central Michigan and with the city motto “A beautiful view…of life,” Bay City has strong Jewish roots that go back over one hundred years. On our day trip we will explore both the beginnings of Jewish life as well as learn how they have remained a vibrant Jewish community. We will end our day with a bonus visit to the town of Caro, once the proud residence of the Himelhoch Family.
Some of our tour highlights include:
Visit Bay City Community Jewish Cemetery, learn about the earliest Jewish residents of Bay City and their unique connections to Detroit.
Tour Temple Beth Israel, and hear the history of this congregation and those that came before it. We will then enjoy a light Kosher lunch, with membership of this warm and vibrant congregation.
A visit to Caro, Michigan. Join us as we learn about one of Caro's original Jewish families, the Himelhoch. The family's Victorian home has been restored to its original beauty and is now a well-respected bed and breakfast. Tour the home, as well as enjoy afternoon tea (Kosher baked goods will be provided) on the beautiful wraparound porch.
Former Jewish neighborhoods and much more…
Abbreviated tour and Kosher lunch option for Temple Beth Israel Members:
Temple members will meet up with JHSM tour participants at Bay City Community Jewish Cemetery. After visiting the cemetery, they will reconvene at Temple Beth Israel to hear the history of the congregation and enjoy a light Kosher lunch with the other trip participants. PLEASE NOTE: This option is only available for Temple Beth Israel members and does not include transportation nor the Caro portion of the trip.
