Laura Yares, Jewish Sunday Schools: Teaching Religion in Nineteenth-Century America

NEW DATE!

Laura Yares (Michigan State University) is on hand to discuss her brand-new book, Jewish Sunday Schools: Teaching Religion in Nineteenth-Century America (NYU Press 2023).

Featuring Metro Detroit's Temple Beth El and other congregations, Jewish Sunday Schools provides an in-depth portrait of an understudied movement through which American Jews explored and reconciled their religious and national identities.

Laura Yares is an assistant professor in the Department of Religious Studies at Michigan State University.  Her research and teaching center on Jewish experiences in modernity, particularly Jewish education. She is currently at work on a contemporary ethnography about what people learn about Judaism from seeing Jewish themes and characters represented in Jewish cultural arts.
