Creative writers, we need you!

The Creative Expressions section of JHSM’s award-winning Michigan Jewish History journal seeks short memoirs, personal essays, and poetry for its 2025 issue. History is uniquely lived through the lens of the personal. There is no specific theme this year, but submissions should reflect on experiences that have influenced Michigan's Jewish history. Be as creative as you would like. The connections are endless (work, play, friendship, schooling, food, art, travel, etc.).  To get the wheels turning:

• Do you have ties to Michigan’s Jewish community?

• Did someone in the community make a difference in your life?

• Have you celebrated Jewish holidays with Michiganders?

• Got a recipe or family heirloom with ties to the community?

You may submit more than one piece. A manuscript, or its essential content, must not have been published previously. Please use Times New Roman, 12 point, and keep your prose to 1,500 words, if possible. If your piece is accepted, we may ask you for photos. It will be your responsibility to obtain all necessary permissions and pay any use fees for the photos to be published in MJH.

To submit, attach a separate Word version of each piece and send to JHSM Managing Editor Tracy Weissman: tweissman(at)jhsmichigan.org. Please make sure to use this subject line: “Submission MJH.” Pieces should be submitted as soon as possible, but must be received by close of business on July 17, 2025, to be considered for publication in the 2025 issue of MJH. We look forward to reading your work.
