“Permission to Laugh: Tales of a Jewish Boy Who Spent 50+ Years in Broadcasting”

Celebrated television sportscaster and Detroit native Bernie Smilovitz will regale us with stories about his Jewish roots, experiences as a 2G (second-generation Holocaust survivor), his career as a sports reporter, and the effects of humor on his life and outlook. He will be joined by award-winning journalist, author, and musician Devin Scillian.

Bernie Smilovitz is a celebrated television sportscaster with nearly four decades of experience at WDIV-Detroit, where he anchored the 5, 6, and 11pm sports segments. Born in Brooklyn, and raised in Washington, D.C., Bernie made Detroit his home in 1986 and quickly became one of the city’s most trusted and recognizable broadcast voices. He earned seven local Emmy Awards and was named “best sportscaster” by Hour Detroit for 24 consecutive years.

Devin Scillian is equally at home on your television, on your bookshelf, and on your iTunes.  Students, teachers, and parents know him as the writer behind the Memoirs series, including Memoirs of a Goldfish, winner of the Wanda Gag Award for best read-aloud book. Television viewers know him for his 30-years as the evening news anchor on WDIV-Detroit, where he won the Edward R. Murrow Award four times before capping his tenure in December 2024.
